What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a new type of virus that has been started in China in 2019. It causes a disease known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID -19). It is a type of family of viruses that has symptoms such as common cold, fever, tiredness, and problem in breathing. The cases of COVID-19 have been growing in various countries, including Iran, Italy, America, India, so WHO declared this virus as a global pandemic in march 2020.

This virus mainly spreads from person to person and those who are in close contact. It is a contagious disease. It also spreads through the respiratory droplets of the infected person, if he or she sneezes or coughs. Its symptoms can be mild to severe, and mainly severe for those whose age is greater than 60 or people with HIV, Asthma, and pregnant woman.

How does the coronavirus spread?

Coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person or through the droplets of the infected person. When the infected person sneezes or coughs, then the droplets will fall on the land, and if any uninfected person touches these droplets, then that person will also get infected.

Coronavirus in India

The first case of COVID - 19 in India appeared on 30 January, 2020. On 04 July, the indian health ministry has approved a total of 650,431 cases, 394,411 recoveries, and 18,669 deaths. In India, the rate of this infection appears to be 1.7, which is quite lower than in other affected countries.

Deaths in India

The first three cases of coronavirus appeared in Kerala, and they were students who came from China. As we know that the transmission rate of this virus is higher, so several cases have been reported within a month. On 10th March, the total number of cases reached 50, and on 12th March, a 76-year-old who came from Saudi Arabia became the first victim in the country. On 04 July, the death toll reached to 18,669. On 31th March, the first death due to coronavirus appeared in Tamil Nadu.

19th March: On 19th March, Modi announced that there would be a "Janta Curfew" on Sunday, 22 March, from 7 am to 9 pm. He requested all the citizens not to move out of their house and do work from home. He also requested all the private companies to provide their employees "work from home". He also asked all the students to come out of their home and clap their hands to give the tribute to all the emergency services such as doctors, police, health workers, government officials, home delivery services, etc. On the evening of 22nd March, Modi tweets, "Janata Curfew is just the beginning of a long battle against COVID-19," which means that curfew is the first step to fight against this disease. He also announced lockdown in some states and districts because, according to him, social distancing is the only way that can prevent us from the coronavirus.

24th March: On 24th March, Modi announced nationwide lockdown, which will be implemented for 21 days. He requested all the citizens to stay at their homes so that we can break the chain of this virus. He also said that the government of India is providing Rs 15,000 crore to the healthcare sector, and this money will be used for developing testing facilities, PPEs, ICUs, Ventilators and providing training to the medical workers.

Closedown

  • On 5th March: The government of Delhi announced that all the primary schools would be closed till 31st
  • On 7th March: All the primary schools in Jammu and Samba district will be closed down till 31st
  • On 10th March: Kerala announced that all the primary schools would be closed till 31st
  • On 12th March: The chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi announced the closure of all the schools, colleges and cinema halls in Delhi.
  • On 13th March: The government of Punjab and Chhattisgarh announced the closure of all the schools and colleges till 31st
  • On 14th March: The chief minister, Jai Ram Thakur of Himachal Pradesh, announced the closure of all the schools and colleges till 31st The governments of West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan ordered that all the educational institutions, cinemas, shopping malls will be closed till 31st March as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus.

Impact of Coronavirus

The impact of coronavirus in every field is given below:

  • Commercial establishments

On 19th March: The chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal ordered that all the restaurants will be closed till 31st March. He announced that no one is allowed to eat the food in restaurants, but the food delivery will continue. He also announced that no more than 20 people are allowed to gather.

On 20th March: Arvind Kejriwal announced that all the malls in Delhi would be closed till 31st March; the only vegetable, grocery, and chemist shops will remain open.

On 22nd March: The chief minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh has viewed the growing cases of the coronavirus, so ordered lockdown till 31st March. He also said that only the government essential services would continue, and the shops of essential goods will remain open.

  • Education

On 16th March: The Central government of India announced the closure of all the schools and colleges.

On 18th March: CBSE released new guidelines for the examination centers, which includes maintaining atleast one-meter distance between the students who are giving the exam, and no more than 24 students are allowed in the same class.

  • Entertainment

Almost all the state governments announced the closure of all the cinema hall, and the production of films have also been stopped. They also decided to lower the bitrate to 480 to reduce the overload on the telecom networks as there will be huge traffic due to internet consumption since people are confined to their homes.

  • Events

The 21st IIFA Awards ceremony was going to be held on 29 March, Indore was postponed. The Indian fashion week was scheduled on 11th March in New Delhi, was postponed. The Padma Awards Ceremony was scheduled to happen on 3rd April was postponed.

  • Historical buildings

On 17th March: The government of India announced that all the historic buildings would be closed till 31st March. The Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Qutab Minar, and National monuments and museums will be closed till 31st March.

  • Religious

On 17th March, Mumbai's Siddhivinayak temple will be closed.

On 19th March, Har ki Pauri will be closed till 31st March.

On 21st March, Rameswaram Ramanathan Temple in Tamil Nadu will be closed till 31st March.

  • Sports

The 2020 ISSF World Cup, which was scheduled on 15th March, was postponed. The Indian open badminton tournament was going to be held from 24 to 29th March in New Delhi, but it was postponed till 31st March.

On 13th March 2020, Board of control for cricket in India announced that the 2020 Indian Premier League would be postponed till 15th April.

  • Transportation

Flights

Indigo cancelled all its flights till 31st March. On 17th March, GoAir cancelled all its international flights till 31st March. On 19th March, the government of India ordered the cancellation of all the international flights from 22 March. On 23rd March, the union government announced the cancellation of all the domestic flights from 25th March.

Railways

On 22nd March, the Government of India announced to close the metro services till 31st March. The union government of India announced the cancellation of all the railway services as well as the inessential public transport like buses.

Road

The Punjab government banned public transport services such as buses, mini-buses, cabs, and autos till 31st March.
