Novel Coronavirus

Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) is a very infectious disease all over the world. Now a day's people have a terror of the Coronavirus. The coronavirus (COVID-19) is affecting 212 countries and territories, where China (Wuhan) is the originator of Coronavirus. It was first documented in Wuhan, Hubei province, china, in December 2019. There are 11,220,009 affected cases of Covid- 19 and 529,604 death cases till now (04 July 2020). Coronaviruses are viruses that firstly circulated among animals. Some of them has also infected human beings.

What is novel coronavirus (COVID-19)?

When we look at these viruses from a microscope, Coronavirus look like a crown. Crown in Latin means Corona. At first, we called the virus 'novel coronavirus', which is a new strain of coronavirus. When scientists invented it, they gave it a new name: SARS-CoV-2 to identify the virus.

Coronaviruses have a massive family of viruses that cause illness and common cold to more severe virus diseases like: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Novel coronavirus was discovered in 2019. When a higher number of people in Wuhan (China) started to get pneumonia after an illness (the same as the flu), the doctor tested the virus. They have not seen such type of virus before. There are many kinds of viruses in the world, but this is a new one. The COVID-19 infection is spread from one person to another by droplets produced by the respiratory system of an infected person during coughing and sneezing.

Symptoms of Novel coronavirus:

When anyone is affected by this virus, it doesn't make you sudden sick. But if your immune system is healthy, then our efforts is to get rid of this. If your immunity is high, then there are fewer chances to get affected by the virus.

For example, our immune system raises our body temperature to make it hotter to kill these viruses.

Everyone's body is different, so the symptoms are caused by our immune system, not by the virus itself. Different people have different symptoms when they are affected by the same infection or illness.

Novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is an illness of respiratory, and it affects the parts of our body that helps us to breathe: mainly our throat, nose, and lungs. In more severe cases, the infection cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), kidney failure, and death. If you are affected with novel coronavirus, the symptoms may include:

  • Coughing/sneezing
  • High Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath/ difficulty in breathing
  • Muscle pain/ tiredness

Note: Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after the exposure.

How does the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread, and how can we observe it?

Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading between people to people when a sick person coughs or sneezes in front of others.

The coronavirus can impact us if any affected person sneezes or coughs on other people or things. The virus can also harm us if the infected person have coughed or sneezed on a surface (like a door handle, balcony grill), and we touch the particular surface or the person's hand. The droplets of the infected person infects our hands and the viruses is transferred through our nose, eyes, or mouth into our body.

How can we cure ourselves of COVID-19?

Washing your hands often and correctly prevent us from the viruses from entering the body.

Six steps to wash hands properly with an alcohol-based solution:

  • Rub hands palm to palm.
  • Rub hands with fingers interlaced.
  • Rub the tips of fingers in the palm of the opposite hand in a circular motion.
  • Clean thumb by holding it on the other hand, and rotate it.
  • Interlock fingers and rub the back of fingers on opposite palms.
  • Then rinse hands with water.

Washing our hands correctly is one of the best things we do to protect ourselves from novel coronavirus.

Try to stay away for at least 1.5 meters from the particular infected person who is coughing or sneezing. Even if they do not have the infection of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), they can transfer germs. So be careful all the time, and social distancing is also a type to prevent us from COVID-19.

We have to follow these rules for social distancing:

  • Stay home as much as possible.
  • Keep 5 meters distancing from others.
  • Avoid handshaking, kissing, or hugging to others.
  • Work from home and avoid outing.
  • Avoid gatherings and crowded places.
  • Avoid touching nose, mouth, and eyes frequently.
Novel Coronavirus

How to make ourselves less likely to affect from novel coronavirus?

To eat a healthy diet and a balanced diet, getting regular physical activity and mild exercises, sleeping well (Minimum 8 hours a day), and reducing our stress are essential all the time for us. Eat more vitamin-C rich foods or fruits like- Orange, Lemon, etc. Take your immune system strong. Drink water per 20 minutes gap (Lukewarm water is beneficial).

Should we be wearing a facemask to protect ourselves from novel coronavirus?

We may see people in public wearing facemasks. Still, no evidence reveals that wearing any facemask will stop us from catching a virus-like novel coronavirus, so if we are well, we do not need to wear a facemask.

If anyone is sick with symptoms of COVID-19 and they have a facemask, they should wear it when they are going to take medical appointments. This will protect others from contracting novel coronavirus (COVID-19) from you.

Is there any novel coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine yet?

For many other viruses, we have vaccines to treat the disease. For novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we don't have a vaccine yet. And it will take some time to make a safe vaccine. There is no specific treatment for this disease till now.

If anyone has novel coronavirus- what should they do?

If anyon have symptoms of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and also traveled overseas in the past 14 days or contacted with any person who has novel coronavirus (COVID-19), you need to meet a doctor immediately.

If you cannot do any of these things, but you are feeling unwell, you might have novel coronavirus (COVID-19), but right now, it is more likely to have a different illness like a cold or influenza. If you feel unwell, go to the doctor or call 13HEALTH(13432584).

Who is most at risk of getting infected from novel coronavirus (COVID-19)?

In countries like China, Italy, have the most cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The people were seriously unwell and have been over 70-years-old or already have a health condition like high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes. The coronavirus disease in children appears rarely. Only 2% of cases were under 18 years of age.

What is a pandemic?

Epidemics happen when many people in one community get on infectious disease (that can be caught from others). A pandemic happens when there are many epidemics of the same disease in communities across the world.
